Responsibilities of Certified Amusement Device Mechanics

Certified amusement device mechanics have specific responsibilities under the law to ensure the safety of everyone using these devices.

Device Compliance

Above all, amusement device mechanics are responsible for full compliance of elevating devices in accordance with:  

• Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000 (ontario.ca)

• Ontario Regulation 209/01 - Amusement Devices (ontario.ca)

• Elevating Devices Code Adoption Document Amendments 541/21 (pdf)

• ASTM-F24 Standard Practice for Design, Manufacture, Operations, Maintenance, and Inspection of Amusement Rides and Devices, in Canada

• Ontario Regulation 187/03: Certification and Training of Amusement Device Mechanics (ontario.ca)

• All applicable Director's Orders

• All applicable advisories, bulletins, and guidelines

Incident Reporting

• An “incident” is defined as a consequence to a person or property.

• Incident reporting is required by law 

• Refer to Director’s Guideline

• Promptly report all incidents, accidents, and hazardous conditions to the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA)

Other Responsibilities

As a certified amusement device mechanic, you are required to:

• Stay current with all licensing requirements, Code Adoption Document amendments, compliance standards, required maintenance schedules and manufacturer’s bulletins for amusement devices.

• Renew your certificate every year.

• Report any changes to your certificate information to TSSA within 30 days.
