Examination Locations:
Effective July 1, 2025, TSSA examinations will be held at new exam centres, review the Examinations Locations prior to booking. There remains no change for the Hub City locations. An updated schedule will be posted at the end of June 2025. Please keep an eye on the website for updates.
Operating Engineers SOPEEC Binders
Hub City Locations
SOPEEC Binders will not be offered at Hub City locations, Operating Engineer/Operator candidates will be required to bring their own permitted materials.
Exam Centres Locations
At TSSA Exam Centres, SOPEEC Binders will be offered as a reference material, there will be one binder for every five seats. Candidates will not be able to keep the SOPEEC binder for the entire duration of the exam, as it will need to be shared with other candidates. While we strive to ensure the accuracy of the information provided in the binder, we cannot guarantee the state of the binder. Exam candidates can bring their own SOPEEC binder, please see the list of permitted materials for Operating Engineer examinations located in the Certification and Examination Guide, section 8 Appendix - Permitted Materials.
To register for a TSSA examination, complete the steps listed below.
(Note: In some cases, an accredited training provider will make exam arrangements for candidates who are enrolled and attending their in-class training program. Please contact your accredited training provider to learn more about this process.)

Review the examination schedule (pdf) to confirm the availability of exam dates and centres before applying. Exams are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the Examination Schedule, an exam sitting is considered closed when the “Available Seats” column is marked with “0”.

For Fuels, Operating Engineers, and Elevating Devices, please submit your request via the TSSA Client Portal.
For Ski Lift Mechanics, Amusement Device, and Boilers and Pressure Vessels, submit your request via the Prepayment Portal.
Note: Submitting a request does not mean a seat has been booked. TSSA will contact you via email regarding your submission within 10 to 15 business days. Only a confirmation email sent by the Examination and Certification department means that your exam date and location is scheduled.
Candidates for any of these examinations must have a formal approval issued by TSSA before they are eligible to request an examination date and time.
TSSA cannot schedule your exam until we have received an Application for an Ontario Certificate of Qualification completed by your Accredited Training Provider.
A Fuels examination candidate who is challenging a higher-level certification (i.e. G.2, OBT-2, etc.) must have a formal approval issued by TSSA before they are eligible to request an examination date and time. For more information, visit the Challenge Certificate Assessment.
If you attend a full program with an accredited training provider recognized by TSSA, you will complete a practical. You will have one year from the practical completion date to pass the TSSA written exam. You are allowed a maximum of three examination attempts, which must be written within one-year from the date of completing the practical with your training provider.

All accommodation requests must be pre-approved by TSSA before the examination candidate schedules an examination. If you are scheduling through your training provider, they will ensure TSSA is aware of your accommodations.
