The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) recommends that all examination candidates review the Certification Examination Preparation Guide before submitting a request for an examination.

The Guide includes:

  • Basic examination details
  • Scheduling information
  • Prohibited and non-prohibited materials
  • Frequently asked questions

2021 Examination Schedule

COVID-19 Exam Protocol:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the examination process has been modified to stop the spread of COVID-19. Examination candidates must be aware of these changes, as outlined below:

  • All examination candidates are required to wear a non-medical mask at all times during the examination process. You must bring your own non-medical mask. TSSA will not provide masks or personal protective equipment on the day of your examination.
    • Entry into the examination room will not be permitted without a non-medical mask.
    • Should you have a medical condition that would prevent you from wearing a mask, please contact the Examination Services team.
  •  TSSA will no longer provide reference materials or code books for Operating Engineers/Operator (“OE”) examinations.
    • Candidates will be responsible to bring their own reference materials/code books. More information on the permitted materials for OE examinations can be found in the TSSA Certification Examination Preparation Guide.
  • TSSA will not provide any stationary/writing utensils necessary for the examination.
    • Candidates will be responsible to bring in their own materials, including pencils, pens, erasers, a ruler/protractor, and a non-programmable calculator.
    • Multiple choice examinations must be completed in pencil, we recommend bringing multiple pencils and erasers to the examination.

If you wish to schedule an examination at the TSSA Head Office Examination Centre, or a Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, please review the following: 2021 TSSA & MLTSD Examination Schedule

 Registration process

Examination candidates should follow these important steps of the registration process:

  1. Review the examination schedule, which is updated daily to confirm availability before submitting an examination application. Examinations are booked on a first-come, first-serve basis. Examination seats will not be held.
  2. Submit a completed Examination Application. Ensure all information is accurate, including contact information and valid Visa or MasterCard information. Examination candidates who do not submit the applicable non-refundable examination fee will not be scheduled for the requested examination. We recommend submitting your application by email. (Applications can also be sent by mail or courier with valid Visa or Mastercard information and/or cheque or money order)
  3. Remember, you can make changes or reschedule an examination only once without a fee. You must notify the TSSA by email at least two weeks prior to the examination date. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the examination fee and a new application form (including pre-payment) will be required.

Please note: for some cases, an accredited training provider will make examination arrangements for candidates who are enrolled and attending their in-class training program. Please contact your accredited training provider to learn more about this process.
