CENTRALIZED INSPECTION SCHEDULING
1. How do I book an inspection?
Elevating and Amusement Devices and Ski Lift (ED/AD Ski) customers should continue to contact TSSA’s inspection scheduling agents to book inspections by:
Sending an email to EDADInspection@tssa.org OR calling the toll-free number 1-833-WFP-TSSA (1-833-937-8772) from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding public holidays. Customers will no longer call an inspector directly to schedule inspections during regular hours.
For changes in mailing or contact information, please email  customermanagement@tssa.org with the updated details and your account number.
If you are no longer operating your site or equipment and would like to request the cancellation of your operating licence, permit or registration, contact licencingandregistration@tssa.org. Please visit this page for details on notifying TSSA of changes in operational status.
2. How do I book an urgent inspection?
For emergency ED/AD Ski-related incidents or inspections, continue to call the Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060.
3. How much advance notice do I need to give to book an inspection?
The lead times for inspection and engineering services are as follows:
- Inspection: A minimum of 24 hours of notice is required when rescheduling a pre-booked inspection.
- Priority (Rush) Services for the Elevating, Amusement & Ski Lift Devices Safety Program have been suspended temporarily.
- Regular Services: Customers should anticipate longer response times during and for a period after the ED/AD Ski transitioned to an upgraded system.
4. What information do I need to have on hand when booking an inspection?
You will need to provide the following information when booking an inspection:
- TSSA installation number
- Work order number
- Type of inspection
- Preferred inspection date and time
- Customer name
- Primary business address
- Billing address
- Inspection site address
- Inspection site contact name and cell number
5. Can I request a preferred time for the inspection?
Yes, our agents look to accommodate your preferred inspection time. Inspections are scheduled based on priority level and the requested time.
6. Can I request a particular individual inspector for the inspection?
TSSA will assign inspectors based on the type of inspection, inspector availability and location. When possible, the same inspector will be assigned to a worksite for continuity.
COMPLIANCE STANDARDS
1. What are Compliance Standards?
- Compliance Standards are a list of high-risk non-compliances. Orders will be issued if high-risk non-compliances are found during a periodic inspection. These orders will require a follow-up inspection to verify they have been resolved.
- TSSA will note other low- or medium-risk safety tasks during periodic inspections. If only safety tasks are found on a periodic inspection, TSSA will not conduct a follow-up inspection. Safety tasks are expected to be resolved and may be subject to an audit.
2. When will Compliance Standards take effect?
Compliance Standards for elevators, escalators and ski lifts will launch on March 1, 2023. Regulated parties are required to resolve all orders and safety tasks within the compliance time provided in the inspection report. Regulated parties have the primary responsibility for full compliance and can resolve safety tasks (low- or medium-risk non-compliances) without further TSSA inspection.
3. Why is TSSA implementing Compliance Standards?
Compliance Standards play a key role in TSSA’s transformation into an Outcome-Based Regulator. Compliance Standards serve as a periodic inspection tool that focuses owners, contractors, mechanics and inspectors on high-risk non-compliances. Compliance Standards support the industry in understanding safety priorities by identifying non-compliances that, if not addressed in a timely manner, may pose a high risk to public safety.
4. Which Compliance Standards are going into effect on March 1, 2023, and to which industry do they apply?
The following Elevating Device Compliance Standards are going into effect on March 1, 2023:
- Electric / Traction Elevators
- Hydraulic Elevators
- Escalator Contractors
- Escalator Owners and Operators
- Above-Surface Passenger Ropeways
- Conveyors
- Fibre or Rope Tows
- Surface Passenger Ropeways
5. Where can I find more information about Compliance Standards?

TSSA hosted a webinar on Compliance Standards for Elevators and Escalators on January 25, 2023, to help the industry understand how Compliance Standards will work, and TSSA’s expectations and customer safety obligations. A recording of the webinar is available here covering the following:
· How Compliance Standards focused on high-risk items were developed
· Items that will be examined during periodic inspections
· Checklists that will be used by TSSA inspectors
· The difference between high-risk, medium-risk and low-risk non-compliances
· New inspection reports
· The process that will be followed if a non-compliance is noted on a periodic inspection report
A second webinar covering the same topics took place on February 21, 2023. A recording of the repeat webinar is available here.

NEW FORMAT FOR INSPECTION REPORTS
What is happening with inspection reports as of March 1, 2023?
Inspection reports for all TSSA safety programs — Elevating, Amusement Devices & Ski Lifts; Fuels; Boilers & Pressure Vessels; and Operating Engineers — will have the same format, effective March 1, 2023. Several enhancements have been made to improve the overall clarity of the inspection report, such as prioritizing high-risk orders by displaying orders with the shortest time to achieve compliance at the top of the inspection report, and including resolved orders, if applicable. Please refer to the Appendix for an example of a periodic inspection report with the new format.
CONSOLIDATION OF EXPIRY DATES
1. What does it mean to consolidate expiry dates and when will that option be available?
Consolidation of expiry dates gives authorization holders the option to have one consolidated expiry date for their devices for each account. The option will be available to authorization holders of elevating and ski-lift devices as of March 1, 2023.
2. How does consolidating expiry dates for various devices help authorization holders?
Consolidating expiry dates helps authorization holders better manage their billing cycles by paying renewal license fees at the same time for all devices. Customers can renew their authorizations on time and avoid letting them lapse.
3. How can I request for consolidation of expiry dates?
Applicants who are interested in requesting consolidation of expiry dates should send an email to licencingandregistration@tssa.org to request an application form.
