As Ontario’s Authorized Inspection Agency (AIA) recognized by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), TSSA plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear pressure equipment. Our work spans engineering reviews, inspections, and quality audits—while actively contributing to standards development and supporting innovation in the nuclear sector.
TSSA works closely with nuclear utilities and component suppliers to ensure that safety standards are met and maintained. Alongside its regulatory role, TSSA supports the modernization of nuclear design, construction, operations, and life extension by evaluating and integrating emerging technologies. The agency contributes to the development of coordinated, outcome-based regulatory approaches, and it shares its expertise by providing training and advisory support—primarily in Ontario, but also to new and developing jurisdictions when needed.
Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) Regulations at Nuclear Plants
The safety and reliability of nuclear power plants depend on rigorous standards for design, manufacturing, inspection, and maintenance. Ontario adheres to internationally recognized standards developed by CSA Group, the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and other applicable standards.
Compliance with these standards ensures the long-term integrity of nuclear infrastructure and safe delivery of clean energy.
TSSA’s Role in Nuclear Safety
Certified by NBBI and ASME, TSSA works closely with nuclear generating stations and component suppliers to perform:
Engineering Review & Registration
- Review and register nuclear component designs and welding/brazing procedures for compliance with national codes.
Quality Auditing & Certifications
- Verify personnel training, process controls, and code compliance before certification.
- Certify suppliers and utilities as Certificate Holders.
- Audit quality programs for manufacturers and repair organizations.
Inspection & Monitoring
- Oversee manufacturing activities of certified suppliers.
- Verify repairs and alterations, witness pressure tests, and conduct periodic inspections.
Contribution to Standards Development
TSSA actively participates in CSA and ASME committees, helping advance standards and integrate emerging technologies for safe nuclear innovation.
