The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a highly recognized inspection authority in North America. Our inspectors control the public's exposure to dangerous situations by examining passenger ropeways (ski lifts) to ensure they comply with the Technical Standards and Safety Act, as well as any other applicable regulations and adopted safety codes.
Our inspectors examine ski lift devices and assess safety hazards. If hazards exist, we will issue compliance orders to device owners. If a hazard poses significant risk to public safety, inspectors have the ability to remove the device from service. In the event an inspector has issued an order which may come into question, we advise contractors/owners/operators to follow our Inspection Order Resolution Protocol to have their concerns reviewed.
Frequency of inspections |
The TSSA conducts inspections of passenger ropeways on a risk-based cycle that ranges from twice per ski season to once every two years depending on the risk factor. |
Inspection guidelines |
The TSSA performs acceptance inspections and tests on new and altered passenger ropeways identified in the CAN/CSA-Z98 Passenger Ropeways and Conveyors safety code. We also conduct periodic inspections on existing passenger ropeways. The safety code outlines the requirements for acceptance and periodic inspections. You can find more information on inspection, testing, operation and maintenance requirements in section 11 of the safety code. Our inspectors also use the passenger ropeway checklists as additional guidance. |
Types of inspections |
Before a new device enters into service, we will conduct an inspection on the device. If the device meets all safety requirements, the TSSA will issue a licence for the passenger ropeway (ski lift). At the start of every new ski season, existing devices must have their licence renewed. |
