The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) reviews applications to install liquid fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane and natural gas) facilities designed for fueling vehicles. These reviews determine facility compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act, as well as industry regulations and adopted safety codes.
Contractors registered with the TSSA are responsible for ensuring that installations comply with related safety regulations and standards.
Below is more information on the process around compliance for fuels used for transportation .
Design approval (before facility registration) |
Before a new facility is registered, its design is subject to an engineering review to ensure its compliance with safety standards and requirements. To receive design approval, you must submit the applicable design review forms and any related fees. Please note for propane stations, the safety requirements of Branch Standard No. 9 are applicable. |
Variance approvals |
The TSSA may grant variances from regulations and adopted safety codes and standards in situations where the use of other methods still ensures fuel safety. These variances allow flexibility for the designer to use designs that do not strictly comply with current regulations while maintaining the required level of safety. The TSSA charges by the hour for engineering time spent on variance reviews. For more information about variance reviews, please contact TSSA's Customer Contact Centre toll-free at 1-877-682-TSSA (8772) or by email at customerservices@tssa.org. |
Equipment field approvals |
Equipment field approvals focus on uncertified equipment and appliances that are custom-made, built on site or produced in limited numbers. It includes a review of the design along with inspection and verification of the equipment's fuel safety features at the point of installation. If the equipment complies with standards, we will apply a TSSA approval label to the equipment. |
General consultations |
We can provide expertise on fuels-related issues to assist in the development of safe and cost-effective solutions. Our engineering team will consult on equipment designs to determine their conformance with code requirements prior to the manufacturing process.
