As a recognized authority in North American Amusement Device inspections, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority's (TSSA) inspectors are certified by the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials (NAARSO).
As part of TSSA's mandate to promote and enforce public safety, it inspects amusement devices found at carnivals, fairs, amusement parks and other venues, to ensure compliance with the applicable safety legislation.
New devices are inspected prior to start up, and thereafter at the start of every new season or following a device modification. If a hazard exists, TSSA inspectors will evaluate the amount of risk it poses to the public and issue compliance orders to the owners and/or permit holders of the device. TSSA is also responsible for investigations if an incident involving an amusement device occurs. Inspectors have the authority to order any potentially unsafe device to be removed from operation. In the event an inspector has issued an order which may come into question, we advise contractors/owners/operators to follow our Inspection Order Resolution Protocol to have their concerns reviewed.
Types of inspections
The TSSA conducts different types of amusement device inspections:
New amusement devices |
Before a new amusement device is authorized for operation, TSSA performs an on-site inspection. A permit will be issued once a device is found to be in conformance with the requirements of the Act and Regulation, its filed technical dossier and the adopted Safety Code for Amusement Rides and Devices. |
Existing amusement devices |
At the start of every new amusement season, an existing device must renew its operational permit and be inspected by TSSA.
|
Pre-Examinations |
When requested, we provide pre-inspection services of new or existing amusement devices. This is done to identify non-compliant safety issues before a mandated inspection takes place. |
