FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Guelph, ON, March 24, 2020) – The Technical Standards
and Safety Authority (TSSA), City of Guelph, Guelph Fire Services, Guelph-Wellington
Paramedic Service and Guelph Police Service collaboratively launched a community safety
campaign in Guelph called Working Together in Our Community – THINK SAFE to
remind residents of important carbon monoxide and other safety tips – and, particularly so as
they stay closer to home during these ever-evolving, challenging and unprecedented times.
Fully acknowledging that we are all collectively in a heightened state of safety and the
greatest issue facing us all, provincially, nationally and globally, is the novel coronavirus
pandemic, TSSA would like to applaud all those involved, for their dedication and tireless
efforts to keep us safe.
As residents and communities have been asked to modify their lifestyle and are spending
increasingly more time at home, TSSA, within that environment and through this campaign,
wants to remind people of additional means by which they can keep themselves safe in and
around their homes.
For three weeks, Guelph residents will receive details about carbon monoxide (CO) exposure
and additional important safety information by mail and through local media. Although spring
is on the horizon, the risks of CO exposure unfortunately don’t change. In fact, in addition to
being mindful of the common sources of CO in the home, we must pay special attention to
things like cottages, campers, boat cabins and RVs as CO can build up in these enclosed
spaces under certain conditions, potentially resulting in harmful and even deadly CO
poisoning. So, it’s important to be in the ‘know’ about CO including the fact that CO knows no
seasonal boundaries.
“While Ontario’s many public safety organizations work tirelessly in their communities,
residents also play a critical role in improving safety where we live, work and play,” said
Bonnie Rose, President and CEO, TSSA. “The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness
and encourage and assist residents in Guelph to adopt important behaviours that will reduce
their risk in their everyday lives.”
“We’re happy to be working together with TSSA and other safety partners in our community
to deliver these important safety messages to our residents in Guelph,” adds Guelph Fire
Chief Dave Elloway.
During the course of this three-week campaign, and through these collective efforts,
residents are encouraged to ‘take action, think safe’ as they work, live and play in their
community.
