Types of Inspections

TSSA performs approvals on uncertified hydrocarbon equipment and investigates incidents or reports of non-compliance. Where non-compliance is discovered, TSSA will order corrective action to be taken, and in worst-case scenarios we will suspend or refuse to renew a certificate or contractor license until acceptable safety conditions are met.

Underground Pipelines
Pipelines carrying natural gas, gasoline or fuel oil is common both on private land and in public roadways. These pipelines, and their associated equipment, must be constructed to a National Standard.

Anyone excavating in the vicinity of these pipelines must by law obtain a locate from the pipeline owner prior to excavation. The owner of the pipeline is required by law to provide an accurate locate within a reasonable time.

Non-compliance
Where any non-compliance is reported or discovered, TSSA orders appropriate corrective actions to be implemented, and in worst case scenarios, orders a device or facility to stop operating until compliance is met. The person responsible for the non-compliance will be invoiced the cost of this type of inspection.

Incident Investigation
By law, if an incident such as a fire, explosion, carbon monoxide poisoning, fuel leak or spill occurs, it must be reported to TSSA's Fuels Safety Division immediately in order for an investigation to be conducted. Tampering with the scene, except to save property or ensure safety, is not permitted.
