Regulated Safety Services

Fuels
Types of Services

TSSA's Engineering Team reviews natural gas and fuel oil piping installations designed for pressure higher than 66 psig indoors, and 125 psig outdoors to determine its compliance with the Act, Regulations and adopted safety codes and standards.

For lower-pressure systems than those stated above, the piping system does not need our approval. Contractors registered with TSSA are responsible for ensuring compliance with related safety regulations and standards.

Design Approval
Before a new fuel system is approved, its design is subject to an engineering review to ensure its compliance with safety standards and requirements.

To submit your fuel device design for approval, fill out the appropriate form and return to us, along with the required drawing/documents and fee payment (see the Forms & Fees section).

For additional guidance, please refer to the following: Variance Approvals
A variance from regulations and adopted safety codes and standards may be granted where other methods are used to ensure fuel safety. These variances allow flexibility for the designer to use designs that do not strictly comply with current regulations but are determined to not reduce the level of safety.

Engineering time spent on variance reviews is charged at an hourly rate.

For further information on how to obtain a variance review, please contact:
Tel: (416) 734-3347 or email:fsd.engineering@tssa.org.

Equipment Field Approvals
This service focuses on uncertified equipment and appliances that are custom-made, built on site or produced in limited numbers. It includes a review of the design and inspection/verification of the equipment's fuel safety features at the point of installation. If the equipment complies, a TSSA approval label is applied the equipment.

For full details, including application form and applicable fees, please read our
Field Approval Information package(Fillable PDF: 316 KB Download).

Consultations
We can provide expertise on fuels-related issues to assist in the development of safe and cost-effective solutions. Our engineering team will consult on equipment designs to determine their conformance with code requirements prior to the manufacturing process.
