Frequently Asked Questions

Site Operator Training

Q : Is the Site Operator training and certificate mandatory for all licenced and registered fuel facilities?
A : If the licence holder of a private or retail fuel outlet does, or plans to do, any light pump and/or dispenser maintenance at their registered facility, they will be required to obtain the Site Operator certification. HOWEVER, the training program is highly recommended for all operators and licence holders regardless of whether maintenance is involved. The training program provides instruction on Code requirements including inventory control, reconciliation and spill containment.

Q : What if I do not do any of my own maintenance?
A : If the licence holder of a private or retail fuel outlet does not, nor plans to do, any light pump and/or dispenser maintenance at their registered facility, they will not be required to obtain the Site Operator certification at this time. HOWEVER, the training program is highly recommended for all operators and licence holders regardless of whether maintenance is involved. The training program provides instruction on Code requirements including inventory control, reconciliation and spill containment - all areas that are of great concern.

Q : Are there any plans to make the Site Operator or something similar to it a mandatory requirement for all fuel facilities?
A : Consideration is being given to the development of a program and certificate that would be mandatory for ALL fuel facilities. The focus of the program would be site management concentrating on inventory control, reconciliation and record keeping.

Q : Is this program of training based primarily on theoretical classroom or practical hands-on training?
A : Although there is a certain amount of time required in the classroom, the majority of the training for each of the certificate categories is based primarily on hands on training. The skills are identified in a sign-off document available through Training and Certification Services. As the skills have been acquired and demonstrated to a fully qualified mechanic, the trainee has the item signed off in the booklet. This continues until all of the required skills for the category being sought have been demonstrated and signed off.
