Variance Applications for Abandonment of Underground Storage Tanks

Helping Property Owners with Underground Fuel Tanks

Variance Applications
Under the Liquid Fuels Handling Code and the Fuel Oil Code, all underground storage tanks must be removed within two years of disuse. If removal of a tank is not feasible, you may apply to seek a variance from this code requirement.

Variances for abandonment of UST's begin with completion of the Variance Application(PDF: 28 KB Download). In addition to the application, an environmental assessment is required. Our Environmental Info Sheet(PDF: 20 KB Download) sets forth the parameters for the environmental assessment.

The application along with the submission fee of $551.25 (5% GST included) and the assessment report are sent to the Environmental Office at our Bloor street office:

Technical Standards & Safety Authority
Attn: Stephen Hoyle, Environmental Services
14th Floor, Centre Tower
3300 Bloor Street West
Toronto, Ontario, M8X 2X4

The package will then be reviewed and taken before the variance committee for approval provided the safety concerns originally contemplated in the code are met.
