ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL FOR FUEL HANDLING SITES IN ONTARIO Protecting the environment in the event of petroleum leaks and spills.
Ontario's Liquid Fuels Handling Code and the Fuel Oil Code require compliance with "Environmental Management Protocol for Fuel Handling Sites in Ontario". This protocol outlines the reporting, assessment and management of petroleum products that have escaped to the environment.
TSSA is responsible for administering the Environment Management Protocol, and works with property owners to ensure that groundwater and soils affected by a spill or leak will be returned to Ontario's standards.
For information on reporting requirements for spills, leaks and discoveries of petroleum impacts or for guidance on Contaminant Management Plans applications, please read:
The Environmental Management Protocol for Fuel Handling Sites in Ontario
This Protocol replaces the Technical Standards and Safety Authority’s (TSSA’s) previous Environmental Management Protocol, referred to as “GA1/99” dated October 2001.
The Protocol is consistent with the information contained in the 2001 edition, and provides updated site condition standards consistent with the Ministry of Environment’s (MOE’s) Ontario Regulation (O. Reg.) 153/04 (Records of Site Condition) and the values contained in the MOE document entitled, “Soil, Ground Water and Sediment Standards for Use Under Part XV.1 of the Environmental Protection Act” (The Standards).
The Protocol applies only to operations governed by the Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSS Act), associated Regulations (O. Reg. 213/01 and 217/01), the Liquid Fuels Handling Code (LFHC) and Fuel Oil Code (FOC).
