Frequently Asked Questions
Welding and Brazing Questions
Q : How do I qualify my company's welding or brazing procedures? A : A company's welding or brazing procedures must be qualified in accordance with ASME Section IX and CSA B51. The qualification process is as follows:
- The company prepares a written Welding or Brazing Procedure Specification (WPS or BPS) on WPS or BPS forms as described in the ASME Code. These forms are available from the ASME website
- The company prepares suitable plate or pipe coupons on which the test is to be performed.
- The company contacts the local inspector for involvement in the qualification of the procedure.
- During the course of welding or brazing the coupons, the company documents the required variables observed during the welding or brazing process on the ASME Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).
- Upon completion of the welding or brazing, the coupons are cut into specimens and physically tested as required by the Code. The results of these tests are added to the PQR to complete it.
- The company submits the original and one copy each of the WPS or BPS, PQR, test results and the welder or brazer performance qualification, as applicable, to the attention of the Welding Examiner at TSSA.
 | Q : How do I qualify pressure welders or brazers? A : To obtain a pressure welder or brazer certificate in Ontario, a welder or brazer must complete a practical welding or brazing test in accordance with a TSSA registered welding or brazing procedure.
1. When the test is for an employer, this may be done using the registered procedure belonging to the employer.
2. When the test is for seeking employment it may be performed at a training facility, using the training facility’s registered procedure.
3. The employer or training facility representative contacts the TSSA inspector prior to starting the test.
4. The TSSA Inspector is involved with the test and issues a certificate after successful test completion. The fee for the test is given in the fee schedule elsewhere on this site.
Q : I have just moved to Ontario. Is my welding (or brazing) qualification from out of province valid for use in Ontario? A : No. Certification for welding under the Boilers and Pressure Vessel Regulation must be in the name of the Ontario employer.
